Thanksgiving Weekend Best Bets

Looking for something other than shopping to do this weekend? There are a lot of holiday events going on this weekend.

Santa lands by helicopter at the Indiana State Museum's front lawn on Friday, November 25 at noon to kick-off Celebration Crossing. Celebration Crossing at the Indiana State Museum (650 West Washington Street) November 25-December 31. Visit Santa, take a ride on the L.S. Ayres Santa Claus Express Train and have lunch at the L.S. Ayres Tea Room (reservations recommended). Celebration Crossing is open November 25-December 31. Museum admission is $7 for adults, $6.50 for seniors and $4 for children 3-12. Parking is available in the White River State Park garage on Washington Street for $3 with admission, just show your parking stub at the museum's ticketing counter. Hours are Tuesdays-Saturdays 9am-5pm and Sundays 11am-5pm.

*FREE* Head downtown on Friday for Circle of Lights tree lighting on Monument Circle. Enjoy entertainment and the annual lighting of Monument Circle. Entertainment starts at 6pm with the tree lighting at approximately 7:45pm. This event is free.

Jingle Rails: The Great Western Adventure is at the Eiteljorg Museum (500 West Washington Street) through January 8. Watch model trains pass by local landmarks that include Lucas Oil Stadium, Union Station and Monument Circle. The trains also travel through the Western United States. Visit the exhibit November 5-January 8. Admission is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors, children 5-17 and students are $5, Children 4 and under are free. The Eiteljorg is open Monday-Saturday 10am-5pm and Sunday noon-5pm. Parking is available in in the White River State Park garage on Washington Street for free with purchase of admission and validation.

*FREE* The Indianapolis Museum of Art (4000 Michigan Road) presents Christmas at Lilly House through December 31. The Lilly House, on the grounds of the Indianapolis Museum of Art, is decked out for the holidays in a decor reminiscent of the 1930s.

*FREE* If you have a letter for Santa, drop it off at Santa's Mailbox on the Circle through December 15. Every letter that has a return address will get a reply from Santa (a stamped, self-addressed envelope is appreciated).

Jolly Days Winter Wonderland at the Children's Museum of Indianapolis (3000 N. Meridian Street) opens Friday. The highlight is a ride down the Yule Slide. Kids can also visit with Santa, play in a "snow castle," go "ice fishing" and have some "cooking" fun in the kitchen. Jolly Days is open November 25-January 8.

See Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz at the Children's Museum's Lilly Theater. This show is free with museum admission. Complimentary tickets are required and can be picked up beginning at 10am on show days. Members may reserve tickets prior to show day. Show dates are November 25-26, December 3-4, 10-11, 17-18, 20-24, 27-31, January 1, 3-8. Admission to the museum is $11.50 for children 2-17, $16.50 for adults and $15.50 for seniors. Free parking is available in the museum's parking garage. Hours are Tuesdays-Sundays 10am-5pm.

The Indianapolis Zoo presents Christmas at the Zoo and Woodland Wonderland. Walk through the Zoo and enjoy the Christmas lighting displays and take part in holiday activities from 5-10pm. While you are at the Zoo be sure to visit White River Gardens for the Woodland Wonderland exhibit.

*FREE* Head to Hendricks County for Danville's Christmas on the Square. On Saturday from 4-6pm enjoy games, food and the lighting of the Downtown Square. Also, a new attraction has been added this year. Enjoy an ice skating rink. The rink will be open every weekday from 4-8pm and 10am-9pm on Saturdays and noon-7pm on Sundays through December 6. 

Ellis Park in Danville invites you to drive or take a horse-drawn carriage ride through the Winterland Light Show. The light display is nightly from 6-10pm November 25-December 4.

Beef and Boards Dinner Theatre presents their annual show, A Beef and Boards Christmas. The holiday variety show starts November 25 and runs through December 23.

The Indiana Repertory Theatre presents "Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol" November 25-December 24.
